NO one likes to pay for insurance coverage but for theatre performers the show cannot go on without it.
Performance Illawarra chair Janys Hayes said the need for public liability insurance is a major headache for performers and for many it is too expensive.Ms Hayes said to combat this, the organisation provided Illawarra-based performers with the opportunity to be included under its policy, which is funded by membership fees."What we are trying to do is keep public liability down for performance artists," she said."Even though theatres or festivals are covered, most performers have to have their own policy as well. It has become an absolute necessity."Ms Hayes said an added difficulty for professional and semi-professional artists based in the Illawarra is the fact the region is categorised as metro by funding bodies, making it harder to find financial support. To raise the much-needed money Performance Illawarra has organised a fundraiser at Project Contemporary Artspace tonight, featuring music from Phil Watts, air guitarist Jimmy Dangles, Chris James and Idris Stanton and Heidi Hillier.Circus Monoxide's Alicia Battestini will host the evening as Maria, and the circus theme will continue with performances from Cheeky Tzatziki and Circus Wow.Ms Hayes said she hoped the night would attract new members to Performance Illawarra as well as provide some interesting entertainment. The evening, coinciding with an exhibition in the space by ICAN, starts at 8pm at Project Contemporary Artspace in Keira St, Wollongong. Entry is $12 and $10, including Performance Illawarra membership.
