Admissions Rise By 4%

The number of private hospital admissions rose 12 per cent last year following Federal Government initiatives to increase private health-insurance coverage, a report has found.
In total, the number of hospital admissions in 2001 lifted 4.1 per cent to 6.14 million.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report said the share of admissions by the private sector also jumped 12 per cent to 2.27 million, with an increase in same-day stays of 17 per cent.
The report noted the rise in private hospital admissions followed a rise in private health insurance coverage.
